Privacy Policy
Last updated: 4 June 2026
This Privacy Policy explains how the Lucy Abroad app ("Lucy Abroad", "we", "us") collects, uses, and protects your information. Lucy Abroad is a news, opportunities, and community app for the Ethiopian diaspora in the Gulf. By using the app you agree to this policy.
1. Information we collect
Information you provide
- Account details: your name and email address when you register, or the name and email shared by Google or Apple when you use social sign-in.
- Profile details: profile photo, home region, country of residence, languages, profession, work status, topics, and notification preferences.
- Content you create: business listings you submit (name, description, category, location, website, social links, logo), comments, saved items, and event interest.
- Reports: if you report content, the report and an optional reason.
Information collected automatically
- Device & usage data: app version, device type and operating system, language, and basic interaction/diagnostic data needed to operate and improve the app.
- Crash & error data: diagnostic reports if the app crashes or errors (when crash reporting is enabled).
We do not collect precise device location, and we do not sell your personal data.
2. How we use your information
- To create and manage your account and authenticate you.
- To personalize your feed, opportunities, and community content.
- To publish and moderate the content you submit (business listings, comments).
- To send notifications you have enabled.
- To keep the service secure, prevent abuse, and comply with the law.
3. How we share information
We share information only:
- With other users, for content you choose to make public (e.g., a published business listing shows the business details; comments show your display name).
- With service providers who help us run the app — for example cloud hosting, database and file storage, and crash reporting — under agreements that limit their use of the data.
- With sign-in providers you choose (Google, Apple) to authenticate you.
- For legal reasons, where required by law or to protect rights and safety.
4. Storage and security
Your data is stored on secured servers and transmitted over encrypted (HTTPS) connections. Passwords are stored only as salted, hashed values (argon2) and are never stored in plain text. No method of transmission or storage is 100% secure, but we take reasonable measures to protect your information.
5. Data retention
We keep your information for as long as your account is active. When you delete your account, we remove or anonymize your personal data (see Your rights and our Account Deletion page). Some records may be retained where required for legal, security, or fraud-prevention purposes.
6. Your rights and choices
- Access & update: edit your profile, photo, and preferences in the app.
- Delete your account: delete it in-app (Profile → Delete account) or request deletion via our Account Deletion page. Deletion permanently removes your account and personal data; public comments may be retained in anonymized form.
- Notifications: turn notifications on or off in Profile.
- Depending on where you live, you may have additional rights (access, correction, deletion, portability, objection). Contact us to exercise them.
7. Children
Lucy Abroad is not directed to children under 13 (or the minimum age required in your country), and we do not knowingly collect their data. If you believe a child has provided us data, contact us and we will delete it.
8. Third-party services
The app may link to third-party websites (e.g., a business's website or social profile). This policy does not cover those sites; review their privacy policies separately.
9. Changes to this policy
We may update this policy from time to time. We will update the "Last updated" date and, for material changes, notify you in the app.
